Setting goals creates a path to stay focused and move towards flourishing.
Sometimes just wanting to feel better is the goal. Even with that where do we begin? A good place to start is by reflecting on your life's different aspects. There are different variations but here are some of the six most common: Relationships, Work, Meaning, Leisure, Personal Growth, and Health. Relationships include family, friends, and significant others. Is there enough nurturing and do they provide the necessary connections needed? Is there enough time to foster those connections? For work, is it the right amount of work? Is it meaningful? If work is also your home life (stay-at-home parents) is there a balance between work, leisure, and taking care of the home responsibilities? Thinking of leisure, firstly, is it even an option? Meaning, will your body allow for periods of relaxation and fun? If it does, is there enough time? Personal growth might look like developing yourself, building confidence, building stronger relationships, leadership, being proactive, becoming more resilient, reading more, learning a new skill, etc.
Health has a range of factors: nutrition, sleep, exercise, use of substances, mental health, and a general feeling about overall health. Here are some generalized health standards. Whole grains and unprocessed foods are standard components of a healthy lifestyle? The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. Uninterrupted 7-8 hours of sleep a night allows the body to rejuvenate. Drugs, alcohols, or tobacco are stimulants and can affect your emotional state. Some may turn to substances to cope with struggles in life. Self-care and mental health become important strategies to help the body better cope with the challenges life brings. Are there any areas that need attention? Let's explore the possibilities!
