Mental Health Awareness

Emotional wellbeing *Mindfulness *Meditation *Yoga

I'm interested in people and my bookshelf is full of philosophy, psychology, and self-help books. I’m about halfway through a book written by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. titled “The Body Keeps The Score.” It’s a book about how trauma affects the brain, mind, and body. Reading the first half raised the question for me: How many people out there realize the brain will disassociate from the body as a form of defense? This is a new concept for me and one I want to read about further. The author is a Psychiatrist and Yogi who talks about how yoga can be a means to reconnect the person to their body so they can be able to be aware of what the body sensations like when it is hungry or needs rest. Some who have detached or numbed themself may not notice things like that or emotions. The book is so full of knowledge it is a focused and intentional read, definitely not just leisure. Excellently written and I highly recommend it if you have experienced trauma in your life.

Our society has started to veer away from the stigma attached to seeking help for mental/emotional health. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought awareness to the reality of the effects of social isolation but also brought awareness to the importance of mental health. Talk with a healthcare provider if you feel like you may benefit from Mental (MH)/ Behavioral health (BH) services. Often, health insurance can assist with information on what is covered and your best options for finding a provider for MH or BH services.

Our emotions impact our daily lives and lifestyle choices. Natural disasters, the state of the world and economic impact, loss of a loved one, social isolation, drug and alcohol misuse, trauma, etc. can all affect our mental health. Self-care is vitally important! , Eat nutritious food, get quality sleep, connect with friends and family, and seek help when you need it.
