The COVID-19 Pandemic Mindset

My journey with wellness started strong in 2019. It's definitely not been easy, but I am determined so I persist. The COVID-19 Pandemic hit my “feels” pretty hard with all the uncertainty, lockdowns, death, and fear it was a catalyst for regression in the coming years. Then the possibility of WW3 happened and is still happening, but I am at a point where I just gotta choose life with the mindset that there will be a tomorrow. I did the end of the world nuclear bomb panic a few times but we are all still here.

With my current situation, I am in a unique position to document my transformation - to critique techniques and report successes. In 2019 I was living my best life. I felt great being 40 pounds down, I had vitality and thought things were going really well for me. I was ready to start dating and put myself out there after a finalized divorce. At the beginning of 2020 COVID hit and panic hit hard. I had just moved to San Diego and didn't have any friends and started working remotely where my company just crushed me with work. My anxiety as a solo parent quadrupled overnight. I didn't want to work for this company but it was stability in an unstable world.

Suddenly there was a significant decrease in the amount of sunshine with mandatory lockdowns- no more running, not in a mask for me at least. No more socializing due to remote work no shopping or dining out either. My child is now at home which I was grateful for but came with a whole new set of responsibilities. We're in a new state, far away from home with no friends, family, or support, and still solo parenting. I had no relationships and lost faith in my employer, increased home responsibilities with homeschooling (zoom school), and no recreation due to lockdowns. I was not prepared for this and needless to say, my body suffered. It started with insomnia due to lack of sun and exercise, which led to comfort eating - it's the end of the world so, hey … why not. I learned that first year to appreciate the sun and wind on my face as I ran when they lifted the lockdowns. But it wasn't enough to reverse the damage that had already been done.

There is a healthier version of myself, I have seen it firsthand. It will take lots of grit, determination, and hard work! Sleep is my first goal to catapult progress. I'm beginning with going to sleep at 10 pm nightly. That means no electronics after 9 pm. I read or listen to a podcast to help fill my mind with knowledge. My goal is 7-8 hours nightly so the alarm is set for 6 am. I use Calm with melatonin ½ tsp at 9:30 pm to help me sleep but plan to taper down by day 3 to every other day for a week, then, none. 10 min sleep meditation at 9:40 pm and I'm down. No spicy food for dinner and no caffeine after 2:00 PM. I invite you to join me and feel free to comment or as questions.
